Information on Bolgheri Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Famille Incisa della Rochetta :
Alongside the Ornellaia, Sassicaia (`place of stones' in Italian) was one of the very first "Super Tuscans" to appear on the scene. Most of these great wines stem from French grape varieties, but are produced using very different methods than those used in France. This initiative became widely spread in the late 1960s, ushering in a new generation of great Italian wines. In reality, the story of Sassicaia is even older. From the mid-1940s, the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rochetta, owner of the Tenuta San Guido, decide to import some French grape varieties (Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon) from cuttings taken from the Château Lafite-Rothschild. Initially designed for the owner's exclusive consumption, Sassicaia wine only began to be sold with the appearance of the 1968 vintage via the famous trader Antinori, and quickly imposed itself as one of the best Cabernet wines, capable of competing with the greatest of Bordeaux. Inspired by this success, many other Tuscan producers decided to mass import a range of different French varieties. Faced with this sudden competition, only rigour and total mastery could set them apart from the others, and the Incisa della Rochetta family embarked on a mission to achieve just that, consistently maintaining the highest of production levels. In 1983, the Bolgheri designation was classified as DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), lending this famous wine a supplementary accolade, however unnecessary in the eyes of its fans. Simultaneously powerful and incredibly delicate, this wine reveals ripe and elegant tannins, an exquisite fruitiness and exceptional aftertaste. Stunning from its formative stage, it has the advantage of being consumable without waiting too long, while maintaining exceptional ageing potential - something of a rarity among Italian wines.
