Warja Honegger-Lavater - Le petit chaperon rouge - 1965
Maeght Adrien Editions. Paris, 1965.
This is a small book that unfolds in an accordion style (a “leporello”) measuring 12 x 17 cm inside of a burgundy cloth-covered editor’s case.
The two covers are also burgundy with, on the front cover, a title vignette glued on.
This is a cult book in which Perrault’s classic text has been replaced by very simple coloured shapes, mainly small round shapes (like, a small red circle representing Little Red Riding Hood).
Clearly, Warja Lavater, the illustrator’s, intention was to introduce young readers to the language of symbols and signs to stimulate their imagination.
It’s important to mention that this copy begins with a sort of lexicon in which the meaning of the signs and symbols is explained in French (only). This copy is in good condition, as is its cloth-covered case.
