Nanny Steal is responsible for numerous classic Scandinavian designs. The international dimension has always been an integral part of Nanny Still’s career. Numerous study visits to France and Italy were a source of inspiration to Nanny Still, and her elegant design classics have won her worldwide renown over the years. A trip to Italy provided Still with the opportunity to discover the work of such people as glass artist Paolo Vennini, and she actually claims to have been influenced by the tradition of bold colour schemes characteristic of Italian glassware. Nanny Still’s work has own awards in Belgium and the United States as well as in Finland, and in 1954 Nanny Still received the highest prize at the Milan Triennial in Italy. In the late 1950s, Nanny Still was awarded the acclaimed Signe d’Or prize. Nanny Still emphasises that harmony between material and object as well as functionality have been important to her as a designer. Typical of Nanny Still’s production are powerful and abundant use of colour, an open-minded approach to material selection and personal, surprising shapes.
